Thank you for your reflections!
Here are some ideas about how you might contribute to the design of your neighbourhood:
-
As a regular citizen in the neighbourhood: There are many ways to get involved in shaping the built environment of your neighbourhood. This might include participating in a city design or public engagement process, applying for a small grant to build a little free library or other placemaking activity, organizing a community mural, planting a garden outside of your home, joining a community garden, and more.
-
As an advocate or community organization: By familiarizing yourself with the principles of and strategies for dementia-inclusive design, you can help implement projects in your community that support people living with dementia and advocate to your local government for design changes to the neighbourhood.
-
As an urban planner or designer: Whether you work on housing, arts and culture, social inclusion, transportation, public spaces, or otherwise, you can incorporate dementia-inclusive design principles and strategies into work. This might include adding dementia-inclusive design as a guiding lens in a new policy, conducting a review of proposed designs from a dementia-inclusive perspective, and engaging people with lived experience when designing or upgrading streets, buildings, and public spaces.
