The importance of dementia-inclusive planning and design

People living with dementia can experience heightened sensory sensitivity and difficulties in understanding their surroundings. Changes in memory, behaviour, and cognition can make it difficult to find one’s way to a neighbourhood grocery store, for example. They can also increase a person’s likelihood of feeling anxious or overwhelmed, particularly in busy or complex environments.

There are specific neighbourhood design considerations that are unique for people living with dementia, which are often not included in general accessibility plans or strategies. If the neighbourhood does not support the needs of people living with dementia, they may become dependent on care partners and spend less time outside the home. In turn, social isolation and reduced activity can lead to declines in cognitive, mental, and physical health.
