Dementia-inclusive design makes it safer and more comfortable for people living with dementia—and people of all ages and abilities—to spend time the neighbourhood. Over time, people living with dementia need support from care partners to maintain their activities in the community. However, dementia-inclusive neighbourhood design helps to reduce the burden on care partners and ensures that people can stay living in their home and neighbourhood for as long as possible, contributing to greater physical and mental health, social connection, and overall wellbeing. The benefits of dementia-inclusive design include:

  • Reduced stigma and greater inclusion in community spaces and public life

  • Ability to continue living in the neighbourhood and maintain community connections

  • Greater health and wellbeing
