Understanding dementia-inclusive communities
A dementia-inclusive community is one where people living with dementia feel fully included in society, both in social settings and in the built environment. There are four main components to creating dementia-inclusive community:
-
Education and awareness
-
Built environment
-
Programs and services
-
Support for people living with dementia and their care partners
This training focuses on the built environment, which refers to the physical environment of our cities and neighbourhoods (for example, streets, buildings, public spaces, signage, art, parks, and more).
Terminology
You may have heard both “dementia-friendly” and “dementia-inclusive” to describe neighbourhood or community initiatives for people living with dementia.
These modules use the term “dementia-inclusive” to convey the importance of full societal inclusion and access for people living with dementia and their care partners.
