Summary of key learnings from this module

Street design impacts the experience of walking or rolling along a neighbourhood street, considering pedestrian paths and sidewalks, crosswalks, transit stops, parking and drop-off, and how building edges meet the street.

1

Cognitive and sensory changes mean that traffic, crowds, blank or repetitive building walls, street grids, and poorly maintained sidewalks can pose safety challenges for people living with dementia.

2

Safe, accessible, and comfortable street infrastructure is essential to ensure that people can easily walk and roll in the neighbourhood—whether to meet daily needs or to just enjoy a walk or roll outside recreationally.

3

Walking and rolling in the neighbourhood help people living with dementia maintain physical health and social connection, which in turn can help slow the progression of dementia.
