Piloting design interventions
Implementing dementia-inclusive design throughout an entire neighbourhood or city takes time and resources. Pilot projects are a great way to test out ideas and generate more support for dementia-inclusive design, as demonstrated in the case studies in the previous module. Over time, planners can build on and expand pilot initiatives based on community feedback and success stories.
Start by considering which neighbourhoods are most underserved and have a high proportion of older adults, and target interventions in these areas. For example, planners can create small “pocket parks” or try transforming a street corner into a plaza, and update zoning to allow things like corner stores and cafés in residential areas.
