Summary of key learnings from this module

Neighbourhood planning and design provide the foundation for walkable and safe dementia-inclusive communities.

1

The neighbourhood scale involves high-level urban planning considerations, such as street networks, land use designation, overall building form, open spaces, and transit routes.

2

People living with dementia often rely on walking and transit; however, cognitive and sensory changes can make it difficult for them to understand spaces and navigate the neighbourhood with confidence.

3

Well-planned, complete, walkable neighbourhoods can positively impact quality of life for people living with dementia, by fostering autonomy, dignity, a sense of belonging, opportunities for social interaction, and mental and physical health.
