Familiar

Familiar environments help people living with dementia recognize where they are and find where they want to go by designing features that people have seen before and can easily recognize. Familiar neighbourhoods support independence and wayfinding.

  • A large, red public artwork helps people recognize where they are and doubles as a play area for kids. Interactive public art can also help facilitate intergenerational connections with neighbours.


  • A public park and plaza space is connected to bank, pharmacy, and multi-unit housing, creating a series of familiar destinations.


  • Familiar vegetation and sounds can help trigger memories and environmental recognition.
