Safe

Safe environments allow people to spend time in the public realm without experiencing fears or risks. People living with dementia may be less aware of physical and social dangers and can experience contrast sensitivity, which increases the risk of falling.

  • Tactile indicators mark where the sidewalk ends and the crosswalk begins, with curb cuts for people using mobility devices and strollers.

  • Pedestrian signals indicate when it is safe to cross and provide plenty of time, with a countdown to indicate how long the crossing time is.

  • Bike crossings are separate from pedestrian crosswalks, and protected with curb bump-outs.

  • Sidewalks are wide, clear of obstacles, and offer separation from vehicle lanes.
